After a great inaugural season, the 1997 Rochester Raging Rhinos season was a disappointment. With an excellent 10-4 start to the season, the Rhinos went on an eight-game losing streak and ultimately finished the regular season 14-14. In the playoffs, the Rhinos were quickly bounced by the Long Island Rough Riders two games to none in the best-of-three series.

In the U.S. Open Cup, the Rhinos met the Tampa Bay Mutiny in a rematch of their epic 1996 matchup, but this time the Rhinos came up short and were eliminated by the Mutiny. While the 1997 season was a disappointment from a team standpoint, Doug Miller was named A-League MVP after he led the league in scoring with 23 goals and 5 assists.
